#4 quilt top for 2024.............. from Exuberant Color

The last seams were sewn by noon yesterday and then the zig zag baby quilt top got its final pressing.  It is 34.5" x 40".

These 2 will be a nice addition to my available baby quilts when I get them quilted next month.  Right now I'm thinking a white with black print for the back of both of them will keep them gender neutral.

Two or three years ago I cut a pile of elongated hexagons from older Marcia Derse fabrics.  I saw this layout somewhere online and decided to test it.  This is one that would ...

6 more seams to sew.............. from Exuberant Color

Only 6 more seams and this baby quilt top will be finished.  It had 13 seams in one direction and then I sewed 9 of 15 seams in the other direction.  I'll finish sewing the seams this morning and then press it.

We got 4-5" of snow in the very early hours yesterday and then it stopped for a little while and then light rain for most of the day.  I measured the snow on the sidewalk and it was 5" of heavy wet snow.  I think we have about 8" total of snow on the grassy areas now ...

The unexpected............ from Exuberant Color

Yesterday was one of those days where all of the little things eat away at the hours and by evening I hadn't done anything in the studio.  I went over some lists I had made of things I may want to make but nothing was calling my name.  Then...this little thought came into my head....maybe I could made a zig zag quilt with the leftover triangle squares.  Since I hadn't counted them yet I had no idea how big it would be.  I just started putting rows up on the design wall and there were enough ...

All ready to quilt............... from Exuberant Color

I sewed the seam in the backing, cut the batting and chose the thread.  It is loaded on the longarm but I haven't taken the first stitch yet.

I stitched some more pieces for the baby quilt while the noon news was on.

In the early evening I dug out some giant weeds growing in the lawn, cut volunteer trees and suckers and picked black raspberries.  This is actually 2 nights of picking.  The berries are small because of no rain for 5 weeks.  There were volunteer trees in amongst the raspberry canes so they are gone now and ...

A nice cool day................ from Exuberant Color

The first thing I did yesterday is turn on the iron and press all of the sewn parts for Fonthill.  Then I pressed 2 of the large pieces of fabric for one of the backings I showed yesterday.

I counted all of the pinwheels and the triangle squares that I have already sewn and then sat down to figure out how many I need and how close am I to the finish line.  IF my calculations are correct I need 150 pinwheels and I have 65 sewn, not quite halfway there.   I have 41 of the 112 center panel squares ...

One top finished, another started.............. from Exuberant Color

The last 2 seams were sewn on this colorwash, the iron turned on for a final press and staystitching done around the perimeter.  It is 32" x 51".

I finished sewing all of the Australian fabric triangles into squares and during TV time I did this layout.  This one is going to be small.  When sewn together this will be about 36" x 45".  I have the leftover long strips left from the border fabric on the 16 patch quilt so I'll audition it and see if I want to add borders or just keep it small.

A Layer Cake Idea! from Quilting through Rose-colored Trifocals!

Are you a layer cake sucker?
I'm trying to use up a few (so I can buy more guilt-free?).
I'm pretty good at talking myself out of them but this was one I couldn't resist -- I wanted it so badly, I had a friend buy it for me at QuiltCon in 2019.
Forty exciting African prints!!
I think they came from Crimson & Tate in Indianapolis, Indiana?
Problem was that I could not cut them up!?! I auditioned several ideas, but never started anything.  What is the point of buying fabric you don't have the courage to ...

Three quilts left my house............ from Exuberant Color

A couple of my favorite people stopped by yesterday and I let them choose some quilts.  This was the first one they chose.  It is 70.5" x 90".  It was finished in 2014.

This is the second one they chose.  It is 66" x 91" and has 120 different batik fabrics in it.  I always wanted this one to go to someone special.  It was finished in 2017.

This is the third one they chose, one of my very favorites.  It was finished in 2021.  It is a scrappy batik Bear Paw  with a favorite batik for the border ...

Three requests from I Patch and Quilt

In about 5 weeks or so my brother and his wife will be welcoming their first child, a baby boy. The color scheme of the baby’s bedroom is based on a soft minty color that has a grey undertone. They gave me a color swatch in the form of a the paint stick they had used and asked me to match it in a baby quilt.

I was able to match it pretty perfectly! Yay for big fabric stashes!

Most of my fabric stash is actually made up out of Fat Quarters, so I can add a lot of ...

Finished............. from Exuberant Color

I used one of my favorite yellow prints for the binding of this little quilt.  It is used in 2 of the triangles on the front of the quilt.

This is a cute little quilt, just 29" x 35".  Quilted on my Pfaff machine, Mountain Mist cotton batting, yellow variegated thread.

The backing has butterflies flying in all different directions.

Will this be the only finish for July?  This week is supposed to have beautiful weather, barely getting up to 80 today and lower humidity.  I will have more energy in that kind of weather and I have so many ...

21 Arboretum blocks............. from Exuberant Color

I didn't sew any more Arboretum blocks but got the last 2 pressed and trimmed so they could join the rest.

I started basting the little yellow zig zag quilt.  I'm using a Mountain Mist cotton batting than needs to be quilted every inch.  I'm planning on ditch quilting the zig zags first and then filling it in with more lines echoing those.  I'll use my Pfaff with dual feed for that.

I have seen several Monarch butterflies on my cone flowers this week.  It is supposed to be one of their favorite flowers.  The bugs ...

Final layout............. from Exuberant Color

I finally decided on a final layout, trying to spread out the darker colors evenly as well as the backing fabric which is in half of the blocks.

Last night I started sewing it together.  I have 5 rows webbed so far in this photo.

Earlier in the day I sewed all of the rest of the triangle squares and just put them up on the design wall as I finished each matching group.  I haven't decided if I should mix them up or leave them matching.

Here is one more fabric I haven't used yet.  I think ...

Sewn together and backing................. from Exuberant Color

I spent a lot of time in the basement doing odds and ends and then sewed this zig zag together last night.  That is the backing flannel next to it.  It is more of a peach color but I like it with the quilt.  I only need about 1.5 yards for this one and that is a 5 yard piece so I'll have enough for another small quilt too.  I bought the flannel on sale at least 8 years ago and maybe longer so it is good to finally use some of it.

ZAP!........... from Exuberant Color

I finished sewing the ZAP top together last night.  I'll look for light print strips that might become the 2" border all around.  I haven't decided if it will be several fabrics or just one fabric.  Meanwhile I'll take it off the design wall and work on the pink baby quilt.

It's also time to spend about 4 hours cleaning up the mess from cutting for 3 quilts.

Two finished for December 2020 from Exuberant Color

The Marcia Derse baby quilt is finished.  The blues are from lines dating back several years.  The white and black are from her line the Opposites (there was a positive and negative of each print). It ended up 35" x 47".

The backing and binding fabric is another from her Opposites line.  Binding is all by machine.

After I finished this one I did a load of laundry and went grocery shopping.

And then I tackled the binding on the big plaid zig zag quilt.  It took over an hour even doing it all by machine.

I wanted to use ...

Zig Zag day............. from Exuberant Color

This quilt top has been on the design wall for a long time and it was finally its day to get quilted yesterday.  I put Martha Negley tree rings fabric on the back.

I did a big loose meander for a super soft quilt.

Then as long as the longarm machine was behaving itself I loaded another quilt.  I had intended to quilt this one on my straight stich machine with lots of parallel lines following the zig zag.  Then I decided I should get real, it's a baby quilt, I just needed to do some quicker quilting.

This ...

Many rows later.............. from Exuberant Color

I think I said this quilt will be 72" x 90" so the seams are long.  I finished sewing the 14 seams in one direction and sewed one in the other direction before I gave up last night.  Of course I want to finish it this month so I have 10 more 90" seams to sew today.

My son stopped by yesterday and got my computer with the dead screen hooked up to my Smart TV with an HDMI cable.  My computer screen appeared so now we know the computer is fine, just the screen is bad.  I spent a ...

Quilt Challenge Day 9 from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

For day nine, I'm showing this quilt that I made for a granddaughter. Marley chose the colors and asked for "something zigzag." I think she must have seen another chevron quilt. I needed to play a little, so the compromise became two sizes of chevrons in three colors. They lost their home to mold several years ago and all of their quilts were lost, so this one is in a landfill somewhere. But that does not take away from the fact that it once existed as a silly quilt for a little girl who loved zigzags just because she ...
